During the early throes of the University of London's foundation, German industrial progress and its technical education had focused attention on what could be achieved by effective training. The University of London, as it was reconstituted in 1900, reflected a model of education exemplified by European universities, such as the University of Berlin, which placed great emphasis on teaching and research.

A two-way flow of influence and co-operation between the University of London and the people of continental Europe has always existed.

Combined with the University's growing maturity, changes wrought by the two World Wars, especially the influx of refugees to London in the 1930s, brought new influences which led to the enhancement and diversification of courses.

As the University has grown and flourished, so its co-operative initiatives with European counterparts have continued to develop.
