Connecting to WiFi

Library members are able to connect to WiFi (wireless network) from all areas inside the Library.

Even if you have previously used wireless networking with Windows, you will not be able connect to our network from View Available Wireless Networks. It is necessary to set up the connection details manually by following the instructions below.

Windows XP | Windows 7 and Vista | Apple setup

  • Select the icon labelled Wireless Network Connection and right click on it. Select Properties from the menu.
  • Click on the Wireless Networks tab. Press the Add button, which will bring up the Wireless Network Properties dialogue. The first tab in the wireless properties dialogue is labelled Association. Fill in the following values: Network name (SSID): uol-open Network authentication: WPA Data encryption: TKIP
  • Now select the second tab in the wireless properties dialogue labelled Authentication. Select EAP Type: ProtectedEAP and untick the box labelled Authenticate as computer when computer information is available.
Then press the button labelled Properties.

  • Windows will now open a new dialogue box asking for your user name and password.
  • Enter the barcode number from the front of the library card (without the spaces) as the user name.
  • Enter your last name in lower case as the password. For example, if your last name is “Smith”, you would need to type “smith” as your password.
  • If your login is successful, then the entry in the wireless network list for uol-open should change to Connected. You will now be able to use the Internet.
  • If your login was unsuccessful, then a balloon will pop up asking you to try and enter the details again.
  • At this point, you can either click on the balloon which will open the login dialogue again, or disconnect from the wireless network and try again.

Troubleshooting

Windows Users

  • If you are using Windows 7 or Vista, please check that the last part of the process has been completed properly.
  • Please ensure that your surname is typed in lower case.
  • Try refreshing your adapter by going into Control Panel > System > Device Manager > Network Adapters and disable your wireless adapter. Leave a moment and then enable - this refreshes your adapter settings.
  • Every now and again - although it is rare - the network might not be available due to technical problems. If this happens and the service is temporarily unavailable, please be patient as the service should soon resume.

Apple Users

  • Some Snow Leopard users have reported problems logging on to WiFi with Airport. This is resolved by restarting Airport or restarting the device.
  • If you have any questions about the wireless network please feel free to contact us at: information.systems@london.ac.uk
