Guide to different digital resolutions

  • Screen quality (72 dpi)
  • Print quality (150 dpi)
  • Print quality (300 dpi)
  • Publishing quality (600 dpi)

Screen quality (72 dpi)

72 dpi is common for use in power point presentations or web pages as it is the same as most screen resolutions. Images of over 72 dpi will not display any clearer as the screen resolution dictates the quality. So if higher resolution images are used it really only serves to increase the file size of the power point presentation. There are some exceptions with screen resolutions but the example given is typical. However it is worth noting that higher resolution images are used in power point presentations where the presentation is to be printed.

Print quality PDF files (150 dpi)

This resolution is only offered for PDF files, and is suitable for journal articles and other text-based documents.

Print quality (300 dpi)

300 dpi we use for print quality i.e. where an image may be printed in a thesis or handout.

Publishing quality (600 dpi)

600 dpi is an archive quality print which we normally only supply to publishers or archivists.
